GIA announces new online 'Colored Stones' course

January 28, 2010
The Gemological Institute of America's new "Colored Stones" eLearning course features videos and other enhanced content.

Carlsbad, Calif.--The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has added a "Colored Stones" course to its slate of eLearning gemological courses.

The course gives sensory-rich, detailed information on gemstones of every variety, and also teaches students how to evaluate quality, rarity and color, the institute said in a media release.

As an eLearning course, the class is part of the Institute's Web-based distance education program, which features more than 1,000 videos, slideshows and animations, making for a robust and enhanced learning environment.

"GIA's new Colored Stones course provides a vibrant learning experience never seen before in gemological education," Duncan Pay, GIA course development director, said in a media release.

Because of the course's eLearning format, the GIA is able to continuously update and enhance content.

"The goal is to serve our students by providing the most sophisticated learning environment and set the highest standards of excellence in gemological education," Pay said. "This new course offers a wider, broader perspective on the colored stone market than a student would ever be able to get from a book alone."
