Dramatic earrings rock at the Grammys

February 01, 2010
Statement earrings, oversized or swinging to the shoulders, were winners at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Los Angeles--Less than five minutes into last night's telecast of the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, it was clear that viewers were in for a wild night with plenty of sparkle and flash, not only in the form of onstage antics but in jewelry--shimmering with diamonds, shining in yellow gold and catching the eye with their exaggerated proportions.

The evening's first performance seemed to sum up the sartorial mood, with Lady Gaga and Elton John taking the stage, their eyes shrouded by sequined glasses as they played the piano. Though every inch of Gaga's leotard-and-platforms getup was sparkling with sequins, Elton John sported the first major jewelry sighting of the night: Though apparently a pendant, the singer opted to wear Liv Ballard's "Capvt Mundi" design as one massive, shoulder-grazing earring, with diamond-studded concentric circles orbiting a smooth stone.

The fashions of the evening were clearly, albeit entertainingly, over the top, as Grammy wardrobing tends to be. In addition to a multitude of sparkling, sequined gowns and tuxes, the jewelry was often of can't-be-missed proportions, taking the idea of "statement jewelry" one step further.

In earrings, presenter Sheryl Crow donned Ofira yellow gold and diamond disk-shaped drops swinging to her shoulders, while Grammy winner Beyonce could be seen from afar in oversized diamond-studded hoops. Beyonce did a quick change after her "If I Were A Boy"/"You Oughta Know" performance. But earlier in the evening, as she walked the red carpet, she wore oversized hoops as well--yellow gold and pave diamond versions from Lorraine Schwartz, featuring triangle-shaped pendants the length of her neck.

Taylor Swift, meanwhile, who arrived at the festivities with eight nominations and whose wins included Album of the Year, accessorized her shimmering gown and upswept do with custom-made diamond earrings from Lorraine Schwartz and Ofira. Pink, too, selected eye-catching diamond earrings for Grammys night. And while quite a few of the stars chose gowns sequined from head to toe, the singer accessorized her dramatic Tony Ward Haute Couture gown with $2.5 million in sparkling jewels from Neil Lane, including long diamond and platinum pear-shaped earrings, plus wide diamond and platinum bracelet, a diamond and platinum ball ring and diamond starburst hair pin.

Cuffs continued to get play on the Grammys stage, with Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie donning a futuristic silver pair on both wrists for her group's performance. For the red carpet, she went the cuff route too, choosing a diamond and yellow gold version from Kwiat. Singer/actress Jennifer Lopez was accessorized on both wrists as well, this time with Lorraine Schwartz diamond cuff bracelets and diamond bangle bracelets.

Oversized looks may have dominated the red carpet, but more conservative styles--especially stud earrings--were sighted on some major stars, including Rihanna and Best New Artist nominee Keri Hilson. Rihanna chose emerald-cut diamond and platinum studs from Neil Lane, accessorized with her signature multi-ring look--including rings from Yvel and Diamond in the Rough--while Hilson wore Neil Lane's platinum studs with six carats of diamonds. Singer Ciara, meanwhile, selected diamond studs from Cartier, worth $191,000. As for Britney Spears, the pop singer didn't go with studs, but she didn't go with oversized diamond swingers either, selecting instead small emerald-shaped diamond drops from Penny Preville.

Diamonds set into white metals, including platinum, tend to rule at awards shows, yet yellow gold got big exposure at the Grammys. In addition to Sheryl Crow's Ofira hoops, yellow gold was spotted on Jennifer Hudson, and on Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who wore Neil Lane's sliced diamond and gold earrings, plus bracelet and cocktail ring, both in gold with diamonds.

Organic styles, too, made quite an appearance, with Anthony Hamilton, Chrissy Tiegan, Rihanna, and Tarsha Hamilton selecting Diamond in the Rough pieces, and singer Jennifer Nettles selecting diamond and geode cuff bracelets and earrings from Kimberly McDonald.
