Couture show sees increased exhibitors, attendees

New York—During a year of low turnout at the jewelry shows, organizers of the high-end Couture show have reported attendance levels nearing 4,900, a record high for the show.

Held at the tail end of May, the show experienced a particular increase in two areas: international retailers and the VIP Cornerstone Retailer program. International attendance was up 20 percent, with buyers from the Middle East and the BRIC countries: Brazil, Russia, India and China. Meanwhile, the Cornerstone Retail program, a segment of "best buyers" from across the country, brought in 30 percent more retailers than last year.

The number of exhibitors also increased at the 2008 show, with 248 companies showing, including brands such as David Yurman, Hearts On Fire, John Hardy, Mikimoto and Roberto Coin.

"Couture is on the rise," Couture Vice President Lee Arevian said in a media release issued on Wednesday. "It is a definite sign of this event's strength that we have not only been able to maintain the number of exhibitors and attendees during this challenging time for the luxury market, but we've in fact grown in these two key metrics."
