The Knot reveals 2010's top wedding trends

February 03, 2010
Wedding trend forecaster The Knot is betting that vintage glamour, including heirloom-style engagement rings and wedding bands, will rule in 2010.

New York--The world of weddings may be more infused than ever with new technology--remember the groom who interrupted his "I dos" to update his Facebook status?--but according to wedding trend forecaster The Knot, the biggest trends for 2010 are throwbacks.

Retro glamour, with styles inspired by the 1950s and '60s, will be channeled in everything from elegant gowns and art deco color palettes to Rat Pack-style cocktail receptions and engagement jewelry that features old-fashioned diamond cuts, The Knot said in a media release.

The company, which publishes TheKnot.com and national and local wedding magazines under The Knot banner as well as providing trend forecasts, predicts that gold will be the metal of 2010 for engagement rings and wedding bands, and that for a vintage feel, brides will choose rose-, emerald-, or Asscher-cut diamonds. As for wedding day accessories, The Knot says the look of the season is "Grace Kelly elegance," meaning pearls and ladylike gloves will fit right in.

Among the additional trends that The Knot lists in the retro glamour category are: black and white wedding attire and ball gowns; beauty inspired by the hit show Mad Men, including statement-making hairstyles such as the bouffant or the French twist, plus red lipstick and black eyeliner to match; and stately cakes, from those with towering layers to confections that feature splashes of metallic detail.

In addition to the vintage trend, The Knot says wedding guests in 2010 can expect to find plenty of quirky surprises at the events they attend: interactive elements, such as video announcements and special performances; first dances inspired by TV's comedy-drama Glee; over-the-top wedding exits; style surprises, such as bright pink shoes peeking from beneath the bride's dress; and anti-bride details, including non-traditional elements culled from the '80s fashion revival, such as fingerless gloves and '80s prom music.
