Bidz.com expands scope with private sale site

Online jewelry auctioneer Bidz.com has launched a new, private-sale Web site featuring apparel, jewelry and accessories.

Culver City, Calif.--Online jewelry auctioneer Bidz.com has announced the launch of its own private-sale shopping site that will feature not just designer jewelry and accessories but clothing, shoes and housewares as well.

According to a company press release, Modnique.com, a name that is meant to combine the words "modern" and "unique," will be a members-only site that will give those who belong exclusive access to sales lasting 24 to 72 hours.

The sales will feature premium brand-name jewelry, apparel, accessories, shoes and housewares, offered at what the company says is up to 85 percent off the retail price.

According to the release, Modnique.com's first sale is scheduled for Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. and will feature Ed Hardy, by Christian Audigier, tattoo-inspired clothing for both men and women.

"We are very excited about the upcoming grand opening of Modnique," David Zinberg, chief executive officer of Bidz.com, said in the release. "The Modnique platform is a logical evolution for our existing business given Bidz's existing online infrastructure and the strong relationships we have with premium designer brands, as well as millions of monthly visitors to our Web sites. Modnique's goal is to offer quality designer brand-name merchandise to our customers at an excellent value that is well below retail."

Founded in 1998, Bidz.com is an online retailer that sells jewelry and accessories such as scarves and sunglasses through a live auction format. In 2008, Bidz.com added Buyz.com, a fixed-price virtual jewelry store.
