Mikimoto to add sparkle to Crystals

December 04, 2009

New York--Mikimoto is one of the latest brands to open up shop at Crystals, the new retail and entertaining district at Las Vegas' CityCenter.

Designed by renowned architects Studio Daniel Libeskind and David Rockwell, the 500,000-square-foot Crystals will play home to Mikimoto, as well as a roster of luxury brands, including jewelers Cartier, Bulgari, H. Stern, and Tiffany and Co., among others.

For its own boutique design, Mikimoto has taken on the theme of "Deep Blue Sea," which has been the inspiration for the design of existing Mikimoto stores and will also be the concept for future locations, the brand said in a media release.

Mikimoto tapped Gensler, the Las Vegas-based executive architect of CityCenter, to serve as the architect of record for the new boutique.

The result is a 16-foot-high glass aquarium-like storefront complemented with ebony-colored stone. Floating glass display stands called "mermaid torsos" showcase Mikimoto pearls in front of a soft, blue-lighted silk drapery representing the sea.

Inside, the 1,870-square-foot space dazzles with nearly 300 mother-of-pearl chandeliers, with light traversing across the store's natural-colored Travertino Romano travertine. The private viewing room resembles a Japanese lantern, the company said, and is illuminated in the corner of the store like a pocket on the ocean floor.

CityCenter and its Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Gold Certification require an adherance to sustainable efforts, and Mikimoto gamely complied, recycling unused construction materials and making sure that all paints and glues used onsite met the Volatile Organic Compounds limits established by CityCenter. The brand also selected light-emitting diode (LED) and metal halide lighting to meet low-energy consumption goals, and made sure that the store's metal studs have recycled content, that all showroom carpet is 80 percent wool-a rapidly renewable material-and that the translucent glass storefront maximizes natural light during the day.

"When creating this new boutique, it was important that we used renewable materials and environmentally responsible technology," Mikimoto America Chief Executive Officer Mitsuhiro Mitsui said in the release. "Mikimoto is committed to protecting the environment, especially since we rely so heavily on nature to produce our beautiful pearls year after year."

Mikimoto Las Vegas can be found on the SW Ground Level, in space 145 at Crystals at CityCenter. The mixed-use complex is located at 3720 South Las Vegas Boulevard, right on the Las Vegas strip.
